Music is a ministry or vehicle for memories, emotions, healing, and can serve as a connection to the Lord for physical, interpersonal and spiritual needs. Music can have a beautiful transcendent property that can connect us to something greater than ourselves. Research in healthcare has shown that music can enhance intelligence, improve mental focus, boost the immune system, strengthen self-esteem, and increase confidence. In our spiritual life, music can inspire, uplift and promote a spiritual experience. Our goal is to seek the Lord’s will, work under the direction of the Ministry, and produce an atmosphere conducive to touching the Lord.
Piano players have a great responsibility in following the spirit. The Lord knows what His people need; therefore, we have to be spirit lead in playing the right song, having the right tempo, and correct theme. We often play a chorus several times so the congregation can focus on the Lord rather than reading the music or learning a song. During a service, we consistently pray for His guidance for direction as the service can change directions on what the Lord wants.
I was honored to be in Bro Clyde Patton’s last music meeting, my Sister June Barr invited me to go with her. I remember these lesson and treasures that I received. Bro Patton told us that if a phrase or line in the band number or song blessed that we should follow that theme. He told us to be cautious in starting off with a fast song, that we needed a place to go: yet, if the band number blessed, we needed to be able to follow. “Don’t get the spirit flowing then fall flat”. He encourage us to stay prayed up, ready, and PRACTICE following the spirit!
I received my calling to work in the Piano ministry through a dream. In my dream, Sister Dueana Patton Berryman opened a door for me, as I walked into a small room I noticed several piano players that I admired; Sis Lenigar, Sis White Anderson, and others. In this room, Bro Patton approached me and asked me to play, I told him that I was not good enough, he told me to play anyway. As I started to play, the keys started following off the key board leaving about 15. I look at him and he stated, “play with what God has given you”. Under Bro Budd, Bro White and Bro Tubbe’s ministry, I have had the great privilege of working in the Nacogdoches Church. Other piano players working in the Nacogdoches work includes: Clint White, Nathan Miller, Pam White, Madyson Freeman, and Faith Wilcox.
